  10. of its award-winning* flatfile database program, DataPhile, today.
  11. This release fixes the problems found in NEXTSTEP 3.2's Indexing
  12. kit and introduces new features.
  13.  
  14. "We have been working feverishly since NS 3.2 started causing
  15. anomalies," said Andrew Stone, CEO of Stone Design. "The folks at
  16. NeXT worked with us to fix the situation, and we've added some
  17. great new features while the Indexing kit problems were being
  18. resolved," Stone added.

  20. DataPhile 2.1 requires NS 3.1 or higher and is available in
  21. multiple-architecture binary form. Multiple-architecture, or fat,
  22. binary software runs on both Motorola-based NeXT hardware and
  23. qualified Intel-based systems. DataPhile 2.1 can run on NEXTSTEP
  24. networks that mix Motorola and Intel hardware.

  26. In addition to NS3.2 compatibility, this upgrade of DataPhile
  27. introduces several features that make the program more powerful and
  28. easier to use than ever:

  30.  * Data Well - This NEXTSTEP-style well, available while you're
  31.  entering and viewing data, contains a draggable text, EPS or PS
  32.  version of your data that you can drop into another app-for example,
  33.  into a mail message.
  34.  
  35.  * Reorder your View Browser - Hold down the command, alternate or
  36.  control key to change the order of views.  Add this feature to
  37.  old databases by opening the file with the command, alternate or
  38.  control key down. Place your most frequently used views at the
  39.  top!
  40.  
  41.  * Smart MERGE - At last, you can merge new records - select "Merge
  42.  with Records" from Import Records... panel.  The Key Field check
  43.  boxes appear. Select which fields the imported data must match
  44.  existing records on, and for each record that matches, the imported
  45.  record updates the first found matching record, otherwise it adds
  46.  the new record.

  48.  * The FIND language is even more powerful - Select whether the
  49.  find should  "and" fields (criteria must be met in all the fields)
  50.  or "or" fields (criteria can meet any one of the specified fields).
  51.  This allows you to find all records with a state of California or
  52.  a last name of Stone, for example. Subsequent finds can further
  53.  refine the found set.

  55.  * Interrupt Long Un-indexed FINDS - For those times you just can't
  56.  wait, now you can stop the Find while it is in progress.
  57.  
  58.  * Ask before backing file - Now you can turn off Automatic Back-up
  59.  if it's bogging down your work. The new, modular Preferences Panel
  60.  will present a dialog box before the backup happens.  You can
  61.  choose to skip this time or backup now. Moreover,  you can turn
  62.  on the backup process for any given open database.

  64.  * German and French translations are available - Thanks to the
  65.  efforts of Gerhard Moeller and Andre Lalonde, our International
  66.  sites will feel more at home with DataPhile2.1.

  68. This upgrade also greatly improves DataPhile's stability and fixes
  69. several bugs, including but not limited to the following:

  71.  * 8K limitation for views and fields eliminated  (NS)
  72.  * Finds work properly on any size text field  (NS)
  73.  * You can share Read Only databases
  74.  * Spellcheck/Spelling Panel loads quietly (NS)
  75.  * Modified entry lists and default values update properly
  76.  * Graphics in headers/footers orient correctly (NS)
  77.  * Icons delete properly from file fields
  78.  * /tmp clears unsaved databases, eps and ps files
  79.  * Read-only databases open properly.
